The Black Hippy member presented the crowd with a highly energetic and interactive performance from his then most recent work (Section.80) at Club Red in Tempe, Arizona. Now as a signed Top Dawg/Aftermath/Interscope artist, he has influenced a generation with his groundbreaking debut album good kid, m.A.A.d city, which was released in October of 2012. Critics have praised the young artist's creative approach both conceptually and structurally through his way of presenting stories. Lamar's album skyrocketed in Spotify streams, becoming the second highest stream of the year. Along with many other accolades, he became the best-selling debut male artist of the year. I felt a montage movie moment begin (the music: "Run to the Sun", by N.E.R.D.) as I searched to find more information on the Basis gang. Chris Alborano, a New Yorker, is currently an SVA student, and listed as the founder of Basis NY. In a recent online conversation with Chris, he explained Basis like this: "Basis gang is basically all my friends through high-school that have a good grasp on who they are and where they're going. We love what we do for work and started Basis with intent to help others find what they love to do; their basis". Dope, right? Back to that night, with inspiration as their product, and my urge to be inspired, I felt a jolt of excitement. That's when I emailed the Basis gang website link to Rell & Isaiah. It didn't take long for their reply in agreement that Basis was legit. Throughout the photo shoot with Chris, I was able to see how cool and motivated he is. Freezing during a rare October snowstorm in NYC, he stuck it out with me, showing no regard of his snow-soaked shoes. By keeping good spirits, we made the best out of a physically uncomfortable situation. While in conversation, I learned that Chris has teamed up with Phil from Madbury Club, Josh and Travis from Street Etiquette, and Ouigi and Gabe from Brooklyn Circus, just to name a few. Chris' work is original, and has a consistent high level of quality. Basis is unquestionably a determined and creative group.
